Of course, the fenghuang/Chinese Phoenix was just straight-up immortal, without the need for the “bursting into flames” thing, since it was more of a godly being. The reason Ho-oh looks strange is because the fenghuang was a mish-mash of different birds.
@Sigh Less “stupid” and more “well informed on actual mythology.” The phoenix (or fenghuang, I suppose) was not traditionally a bird wreathed in flames; it just burst INTO flames as needed.
Also, of course I’m not saying they look alike. Unless you’re suggesting I was saying that Ho-oh looks like a measure of something, which is less my problem.
I know what a pheonix looks like, and if Moltres didn’t exist then maybe we wouldn’t have a problem. But if you tell me that Ho-Oh looks anything like the regality in, for example, Philomena then I can’t help but assume that you’re stupid/have bad taste.

Also, the only reason the movies and anime gave Ho-oh little in the way of appearances is because it’s one of the most important Pokemon in Ash’s life, so you can’t just have it show up willy nilly. XD
Guys, the design is friggin ridiculous. NOBODY likes that design because he looks like an over-sized parrot, his name is stupid, and he’s got almost no love from the anime nor the movies. He’s a failure of a Legendary and he always has been.
@sigh Dude, are you, to forgive the Zecora-sniping, high? Ho-oh is one of the best designed Legendaries in general. He/she LOOKS like a phoenix sun-god. At least it’s not another goddamn dragon or giant mass of rock outcroppings.
Fun fact: my favorite use for Ho-oh in fanwork is always “the supposedly good pure Legendary, hiding darkness and evil beneath the veneer.” Think Old Testament Yahweh, sans the good publicity. XD

To be fair to the name, though, it IS a Romanized form of the name in another language. To us English speakers, it will sound a bit odd.
Way too flamboyant and I think its name is dumb.
