The finale was God awful though. The epic battle was just a rehash of several other battles with Chryssy and Tirek, and Discord being Grogar has to be the dumbest twist ever.

Other than a couple episodes I liked before the finale in the second half, some of those episodes were just uninteresting to me. And they only piss me off more since they’re part of the final season which didn’t have to be the final in the first place.
It acted like it was any other season when really it shouldn’t had.
And that’s why it failed. Instead of building up the excitement and suspense of this final threat, developing the villains that had come and gone while putting our heroes through the ultimate test, it was just another season with silly antics and hijinks like every other season did.

I hate to agree with you but it did feel like until the finale and the epilogue, Season 9 was starting to lose steam. :( It acted like it was any other season when really it shouldn’t had.
Not one of their better episodes, particularly with Rainbow Dash holding the Idiot Ball during nearly the entire episode. Was partially redeemed, though, by RD finally realizing that Twilight Sparkle had set her up from the start. Twilight’s smug denial–right in front of Celestia–was hilarious. Trollestia’s pupil learned her lessons well.

Hot take, season 9 was actually off to a decent start. It had a decent set up, and up until this point, most of the episodes were actually pretty good. Better than most of the latter half season 8 imo.
But starting with this episode, there was a SHARP decline in quality. This episode was the first in a line of mane 6 send off episodes where a member of the mane 6’s character is completely derailed. And sadly, season 9 never recovered, and it’s only downhill from this point on.
