Overkill. This is probably the movies’ biggest weakness that the critics had noticed when they commented that the finale was “too weak”. The humiliating fall of the earth ponies into the silliness where they were shown as caricatured examples of “the stupid fascist” was a good example of this. Here we see how the unicorns have been completely “wacked” on top of being deeply depressed after losing the magic, and thus also ended up in living caricatures that “should be funny”, the movie producers do not see that they exaggerate when it is not needed. It is not funny.
Only the pegasi seems to have avoided this; even on single Russian recordings there are no signs of deviant behavior or oddities - we simply see a normal pony people with their typical characters like militarism, for which they were known. That is probably why the concert sequence was very much preferred by the Russians when they distributed parts of the movie online.
Future writers - who now have very much - much ~~! ~~ to rework - can use this strangeness of the unicorns by using these crystals as a source behind this behavior, it is possible that the unicorns had become “drug addicts” by using stored magic over the centuries.
What we see is because Cullen, Ucha and Sullivan wanted to push through their own ambitions to have a clear break with the G4 and create their own reality at the beginning of the G5. It is clear that the movie is 100% G5 instead of a transition between G4 and G5, and was for the most part finished in 2020 before the decision to use the G4 lore was made.
Fortunately - very fortunately - the character gallery around Sunny is strong enough to carry the entire movie. Or would the G5 movie have ended up as a serious blunder.
Given that every high-level magic-using unicorn we saw in G4 was bonkers, I always assumed that using magic fried your brain over time. Apparently this is the end-state after several generations.
