There is credence to that theory. There’s also the idea that she wanted as many ponies under her metaphorical thumb as possible, and thought the Crusaders would be essential to her plan, or else she didn’t want to lose a single one, and having them banned from the school premises because of her intentional fail jeopardized that. I do want to believe there was some good in her, before she became so obsessed with power.

I’m of the opinion that she really did wanna be friends with the CMC. Why else would she have felt bad for them in this scene? It couldn’t have been a facade seeing as there was no one even watching her at this moment.

Besides, they were complaining about crying screencaps, not crying images in general; it sounds like they’re OK with the latter but irritated with the former. There’s no real way to filter that since they like screencaps and are OK with crying but don’t like them together. How do you filter that?
Knowing how she really is now and looking back on this scene, it makes one wonder: was she legitimately struggling in her classes, or did she know the Crusaders hung out here and was putting on an act within their earshot to gain their sympathy?
