For me it’s just having 100% animal head on 100% human body. There needs to be some softening of the animal features on the head or some animal details on the body like different legs, hands, feet, or torso proportions in order to make a believable hybrid. Most Western anthro just looks like a naked human in body paint and a horse mask.
A lot of pony art has them standing in positions an equine could never manage, but the fore and rear legs aren’t human, all hoof appendeges, and have a barrel-like torso with less pronounced facial features, so they mostly for non-anthro, sometimes tagged as semi-anthro.
Holistic design skills come into play. If you don’t suck, your anthro will look great! 👍 Anthro isn’t magically bad just because you personally don’t like furries.
This is my usual reaction to anthhro. The pony form is nice, the human form is nice. Even the human form with ears and tail is nice, but at some point the two together ends up looking very weird.
