Stayed up all day and almost into early morning, refreshing… and waiting. Barely left this Derpibooru site.
Had to use my uncomfortable Everything filter so I wouldn’t miss it.
But I didn’t.
And I am beyond grateful. 🥲😌🤗
It became much more popular / trafficked than its owner (eco) expected
The setup (a managed Dreamhost instance) and software (shimmie) couldn’t handle it
For its last year, the site was regularly down for hours and days, any action (load image, upvote, comment, etc) could take over a minute to go through, or just time out and fail completely
The site culture changed pretty dramatically (much more channer-like, very “edgy”, full of trolls, etc.) and eco loathed that
eco turned down help from others to maintain or upgrade the site (derpi was never meant to exist, Clover coded it as a replacement to shimmie for eco to ), mostly due to his disillusionment with the base
Ultimately he decided it wasn’t worth working on and couldn’t hand over the site as-is cleanly, so picked derpi out of the few alternatives at the time as successor and gave a deadline for the site going read-only

I’ve only been a part of this website for three years (since September 2019 I believe) - but having been in the MLP fandom since 2015, feels like it’s been longer. :)
