So Mauroz still ships, or at least pairs, Spike and Rarity. I’m cool with it. Maybe not in his primary story but it is appreciated none the less. A nice bonus.

That is true, but we also have canon that Spike with the Ruby in his chest (Beserker Spike when he is big and looks like a green-haired Super Saiyen) would be interesting to Rarity, knowing Spike has that side of him being the reincarnated Equestrian Dragon as Raity and the of the girls are reincarnated characters of Equestia in Human form. So to just the two of them, there is an exclusive link between those two.
Also, I’m really not surprised Sweetie Belle is the one that give Spike the idea to gift Rarity with.
Also, we can use that this happened in Japan–just saying. Still a little uncomfortable though.
I can only imagine how Spike will respond after the showcase. Bet he’ll want to give her a present that represents strength, dominance and regality. Given he’s a dragon, he’ll probably look up something to do with dragons. If you know what I mean 😉
