The intended purpose is to encourage self-sacrifice against one’s own personal wants and needs thereby building discipline and giving to others under the pretense that, whatever mathematically logically engineered the technology of biological processes and consistent patterns in existence (opposite of random chaos), would expect them to.
Finances and volunteered hours so given are then distributed to community needs. In reverence, fear, or supposed love, doing so helps secure one’s existence and calling, and doing the opposite comes with eternal, karmic punishments. These improvements to citizen behavior and community aid, truth or not, are why they’re tax exempt as a charity.
Though that doesn’t mean the good intentions therein aren’t taken advantage of or misinterpreted.
