Scootaloo stared at the…um what did Twilight call it? Anemometer! That was what it was called. She watched anemometer spin in her hoof. The wind was definitely picking up speed.
Not that the pegasi filly really needed the device to tell her that; a quick glance over her shoulder confirmed that the line of shelf clouds was bearing down on them. She also caught a brief glimpse of why she and her fellow Cutie Mark Crusaders climbed to the top of the treeless hilltop.
A flash of lightning. A few seconds later the sound of thunder came growling across the valley.
Scootaloo looked to her left. Sweetie Belle was staring intently at the kite she was controlling. The marshmallow colored unicorn had been the first to volunteer when the question who would fly the kite came up.
The orange pegasus wanted to ask her how she was doing, but the Sweetie was holding a wooden rod between her teeth with big grin on her face, tied to the rod was silk cord. The silk was spliced to a hemp twine that went all the way up to the simple diamond kite that was now straining in the growing wind. To other things that made this scenario special were. Besides flying a kite in the thunderstorm. They were:
First was the iron nail affixed to the top of the kite.
The second was the large key they had connected the hemp twine and silk cord.
Last was the jar of apple jelly laying in the grass in front of them.
Scootaloo glanced over at Applebloom who was glaring at a book they’d borrowed from Miss Petina. The mare had told the fillies that it came from a far of distant land, and had apparently was a story about a really smart fellow who had helped found a country and start a post office, along with a whole bunch of other things. The earth pony had a pencil clenched between her teeth.
Applebloom apparently wasn’t impressed by what she’d read.
“Learned anything useful!?” Scootaloo yelled over the rising wind.
The buttercream yellow filly spat the pencil out on the grass. “Nuthin’! She looked over at the pegasus. “Next time ya can do all the readin’ in preparation fer one of these things!”
Applebloom closed the book and stuffed into a waterproof bag. “This Franklin feller was suppose ta be super smart, but he has sum whacky ideas about how weather worked! Big on ideas, but no clue how it really worked! As I once heard Granny say.”
That pony is knows about as bunch as a virgin at a stud ranch!
That got a snort and a giggle out of Scootaloo. “Really?”
Applebloom looked up at the sky and giggled as well. “Yeah. I reckon she didn’t know I was in the next room over when she said it.”
The earth pony leaned forward and picked up the glass jar of apple jelly with her front hooves. She stared at it for a second.
“But if I’m right, and we can turn ordinary apple jelly into zapp apple jelly this way, it’ll be a pure genius!”
Sweetie wasn’t paying too much attention to what her friends were talking about. Her attention was entirely focused on flying the kite. She feel the wind increasing and the rumbles and growls of thunder were getting louder and louder.
This was going to be incredible.
This is the first drawing I started during my recent weather themed Picarto stream.
