Spike was the most egregious case of the idiot ball. He’d flip from being the most level-minded character of them all to acting his age as a baby dragon the moment it was his turn to be the protagonist. “Spike episode”, as you well know, earned its negative connotation.

I am never going to NOT be salty about the fact that they did not release a Golden Oaks Library playset until AFTER IT HAD BEEN MURDERED ONSCREEN AND TRAUMATIZED A GENERATION OF INNOCENT LIBRARY-LOVING CHILDREN
For two, your point about proper adults was equally true by the end of FiM. The show was worsened by forcing the Mane 6 to be the protagonists until the very end, instead of letting them transition to ing roles, like a proper soap opera. Both the Student 6 and the Mane 6 were shortchanged by that decision.
Oh yeah I couldn’t agree more. The difference here is that by the end of S5 there had been more than forty hours of FiM; you could easily have charted an arc from debutante to pillar of the community and in many ways they did even if they went back on it a bunch. In comparison, mid/late season Fluttershy and of course many of the movie Twilights often feel like they forgot the first two seasons.
IMO Forever Friendship just isn’t going to have time to depict the same growth on the screen for six characters while doing everything else (especially if the main cast start out ‘younger’ than they were in G4) as FiM, so basically I hope we get an idealized S4 Applejack show up to teach characters about honesty the way, in a perfect world, I would have liked a hypothetical S8 Applejack to do so.
I’d also like it if Spike is a bit smarter and more mature than he was in G4. The episodes where either he or Twilight are holding the idiot ball would work better if the consistent protagonist is the one learning.
(hasbro just has to when characters have already learned a particular lesson and not rehash old plots that erase their character development or flanderize them)
Anyway, all that is to say, I hold out hope that they both will be in it and won’t suffer a character assassination. Whereas Twilight/Pinkie/Fluttershy already got done so hard by the later seasons that building them up from nothing again is in many ways the merciful thing to do.

First, I really like the term “Core Four”. I’ll suggest that elsewhere when the opportunity arises.

If the CoreFour are defacto younger they might have kept AJ and Rarity as proper adults, effectively pushing them into side character status.
AJ and Rarity are popular in China so while it’s possible they weren’t going to be in it (and we all know hasbro hates money) the idea of reintroducing them with less design changes than other characters to cash in without disrupting their already extremely limited schedule does seem sensible.
Probably the biggest takeaway for me was the fact that there’s going to be ~20 minutes of content PER MONTH so trying to balance the mares that actually have dayjobs with their appearance with the main cast would have been hard anyway. I’d rather have AJ-in-truth that appears intermittently than AJ-in-name-only who is always on screen.
