Decided to look at the official art to get a look at the cutie marks. I noticed a very big thing with Twilight’s that confirms to me that AJ and Rarara ain’t going to be a part of the mane cast at any point. Unless they’re not taking deeper design into like the G4 runners did. But I doubt that since:

Have they said anything about the animation yet? Lil Critter mostly works in 2D, but these designs feel like they’re meant for 3D models.

Fluttershy, Pinkie, and Dash do all have significantly different hairstyles, at least; the biggest difference is the overall art style– which I think looks great– but we’ll have to wait and see how much they stick to it in the actual show before it can really be written off as “low effort”. It also remains to be seen how good this design aesthetic will or won’t look in motion, but given that it’ll be animated in a completely different way it’s safe to say it’ll also have a completely different look and feel than FIM, since most of how the characters moved and interacted with their environments was very dependent on the Flash models they were built with.

They remind me of the “rainbowfied” designs from the end of season 4. IDK why, but I always got the notion Hasbro wanted those designs to be a recurring redesign where the Mane6 would “rainbow up” the same way the Equestria Girls would “pony up.” Personally, I wasn’t at all surprised by these designs when I saw them.

I mean, even if it does turn out to be terrible, it at least looks pretty and is sure to have a bunch of great toys, and will very definitely get a big influx of new fans! If it’s bad it won’t have hurt anyone’s beloved memories of their favorite earlier generation, and if it’s good that’s just a super great thing!
