Lore Qaylidi Dervishes: At the start of the Storm King’s rampage, the Queendom of Hyenia was among the first nations that would fall to his onslaught. Though a venerable state founded all the way back in 232 ALB and which had stood at the crossroads between the Great Lakes in the west and the Ancient Pact in the east ever since, it had grown corrupt and insular. Under the iron paw of the tyrannical Queen Dahab and with its population trapped in an ironclad caste system, Hyenia had not kept up with the times and ended up not crumbling when the armadas of air ships came sweeping in from the southwest, but shattering.
With armies all but annihilated, its capital besieged and pillaged and its queen dying along with the vast majority of Hyenia’s elite, the queendom that had stood for over seven centuries was undone in less than seven weeks. Only those who ran would make it out, fleeing deep into the mountain tunnels underneath Hyenia or north into the desert as yetis kept pursuing them for their amusement. In this desert however awaited the only force still capable of resisting; the Qaylidi Dervishes.
Founded by the philosopher-mystic known as Great Teacher Fahamka, the dervishes follow a creed known as the Qaylid. Under it, each hyena is entrusted with the future and will each day forge the potential she was given to create history. Life is an eternal trial, and wastefulness and sloth are considered grievous sins among them. They had been expelled from the Hyenian heartland decades ago for their opposition to the opulence of the Hyenian court and the caste system, but as the Qaylid teaches the future is what matters, not the past, and as long as Hyenia was under yeti control the hyenas would have no future. One of the few surviving nobles of Hyenia and daughter of the commander of the royal guard - Furasho - publicly rejected her title and rank to instead pledge herself to the dervishes, asking only that Hyenia be liberated. She has now led many of the dervishes ever since in their raids in the desert while the hyena only known as Masaska - the great teacher’s hidden blade - has moved through the occupied lands to assassinate key leaders and offer aid to local resistance groups.
Ever since then, the Qaylidi Dervishes have engaged in a constant low intensity struggle against the yeti warlord that now controls their old homeland and has renamed it ‘Thundaria’. They have been measured and careful in their resistance, as they are well aware that if they caused too many problems, the response would be greater than what they could handle. So they have fought carefully, and they have waited. The Great Teacher knows that not even the Storm King is immortal, and as news trickled south of his death on the shores of Northern Zebrica, the Dervishes finally knew that their time had come.
