But nobody’s equating/treating him like the Cake twins, ergo, he is not a literal baby; the term only refers to his relative age to adult dragons who can take hundreds of years to reach full maturity. That doesn’t sound very human.

The instances you referred to Spike being “immature” are a scant few very early items. Mathematically there is overwhelming greater evidence that indicates Spike’s sense of maturity, even often acting as the voice of reason, in handling several adult matters and responsibilities. And in those cases, adults conceptually do exactly that anyway.
Besides, you itted that maturity level is not even tied to the adults means you self-defeated any implication that a problem with having the mental, adult maturity enough to make romantic decisions in a long-term relationship. Since you believe adult ponies do not act like IRL adult humans, continued exacting correlation as a baseline of morality is a bit broken.
In fiction it is possible (and it is obviously true in MLP) for biological age of maturity to not correlate with the mentally adult maturity to make romantic decisions in a long-term relationship. Humans don’t actually fully mature until age 25, and what constitutes exact adult age to do this/that fluctuates throughout time, even today.

To build a paradigm based on universal absolutes (facts that do not care about feelings), you must stop stop believing what is true based on emotional impulse, swallow the emotions (even if they make you feel gross), and apply discipline for logical thinking. Otherwise, you are vulnerable to social justice warrior moral grandstanding, even if you’re not consciously aware.
That is how we sort the difference between beliefs based on facts and arbitrary opinions based on feelings.

By your logic, any depiction of war in fiction is the exact equal to war crimes. The foundational framework of your belief is that fiction “does not matter”, and if that is an absolute truth, then it must be applied across everything that is fiction and make no distinction to reality.
Being that this is the 3rd-most popular ship by count on the site, en mass tons of people in the community agree, making this idea that it’s “wrong on so many levels” a minority viewpoint and it’s not hard to see why.
If it makes you feel gross and uncomfortable, 1-2 complex tag filters can hide it. Which is sad because, I don’t even ship Sparity, but I can enjoy the cute innocence of it in things like this.

PetalStorm is my OTP, I draw it, am writing fanfiction on it, and I go to sleep at night just fine knowing as an absolute of the universe no wrongdoing has occurred.

I have to agree. Spike is a kid, no matter what justifications people use to ship them. Spike’s crush on Rarity is just that. A crush by a little kid on someone he finds attractive. Not basis for an actual relationship.

He wasn’t really treated like an adult. Twilight referred to him as a baby dragon, after all and he needed a chaperone the one time he tried to get on a train on his own.
He doesn’t even have an adult type mental maturity, really. He tried to run away from home when Twilight got Owlicious, acts childishly at the prospect of getting presents in 2 Hearths Warming episodes and generally has childish responses to problems in most of his episodes. He really isn’t that much more mature then the adults.
And it’s not even a species thing. We’ve seen dragon teenagers in the form of Garble and Smolder. They certainly act like teenagers. Smolder in particular hangs out with other teenagers and is noticeably older then Spike. She too is not considered an adult in the show.
Also, if a child happens to be mature for that age, that does not make them adults.
And yes, numeric numbers do matter because the show itself has shown us that characters for the most part, age similarly to humans. Age is not just a number. Neither in the show or in real life. And yes, Discord should never have been shipped with Fluttershy. It’s gross. Kind of like a 70 year old man dating an 18 year old. Sparity also shouldn’t be a ship because it’s blatant pedophilia. It was creepy enough when Rarity was stalking Spike while he was spending time with Gabby.
I don’t know what else to call it when it’s a proven fact that Spike is around the same age or younger then Rarity’s own little sister. By this logic it’s just as OK to turn Rarity into a lesbian and start shipping her with Applebloom, because it’s fictional anyway so who cares.
Being treated as an adult is one thing of course, that doesn’t mean anything by much.
Having the mental maturity, be the voice of reason in a group of adults (in theory, we’re not exactly sure what the age of the girls are), and demonstrate high levels of adult responsibility in mentality and being treated as an adult because of this… and if the concern in question is: is he capable of making free and emancipated decisions with the maturity of what society seems adult-like is satisfied. That’s quite different because him treated like an adult is justified.
i.e. Spike’s relative age does not match the rate of maturity for his species as ponies, and certainly not us.

Ages in Equestria don’t seem to follow normal Western human trends. The CMCs started their job almost as soon as they got their cutie marks, advising adults even; Spike has performed diplomatic missions, fought in multiple battles, has handled several matters of government, and functions as a high-level, articulate assistant. And getting wings is grounds for already being kicked out of the nest.
