“I don’t,” the detective answered, taking a step back to full appreciate just how high the tree’s canopy was. The canopy itself, however, was rather small and sparse looking. “And I don’t see how these are connected to the case.”
“They are called ‘Thousand March’.” The agent was leaning on the tree now, trying to find something on it.
The detective nodded absent-mindedly to the agent’s answer as her gaze slowly moved down from the canopy to the trunk and then to the curious split into four sections which in turn led to the roots. The shape seemed familiar, somehow, but she couldn’t quite name what it reminded her of.
The agent continued, “They are named from a myth. In the final days of the First Kingdom, King Aurora had wiped out almost everything that could contain memory, but he still had his knights left. He wanted to destroy them all but decided against it, cursing them to turn into trees where they stood in front of his castle. A thousand of them stood.”
The detective nodded again, this time more slowly. The additional information had kickstarted the connection of dots in her mind. Four trunks that turned into one and stood upright. Knights in armour, resolute. Thousand.
She took a step back with a gasp.
“This is of course not one of those knights, but it still used to be someone,” the agent concluded the detective’s thought.
