May 21st, 2020. 5:02 AM. - The “subtle” message.
I had been awake for an hour now. Ever since a sudden strange sensation woke me up. I can’t describe it properly, it just felt like… Resonance? It was unsettling in how much it made me feel alert and energized. I can’t explain how or why I felt that way.
It was alien yet familiar at the same time. I couldn’t go back to sleep, so I’ve been wandering the cabin for the past hour, listening to my crystal radio. At some point the music was interrupted by an emergency alert about some unspecified incident in Des Moines. The details were scarce; the quiet night was interrupted by air raid sirens and seconds later some kind of explosion created an unnatural multi-colored shock wave in the air above the heart of the city.
I sighed and rubbed a forehoof on my face. “Of course it did.” Out of everything I’ve been through so far this month, this was another one on the list of freaky shit that made people freak out or question reality. This one was the former, because the military was locking down American air space while they try to identify what the hell had happened and wither it was some kind of weapons test by a foreign country.
When the clock hit 5:02, something strange happened. The sky outside the cabin window started glowing. Or rather the storm clouds did. It was like someone took a prism’s light and shuffled it around in some bizarre form of refraction through the cloud layer.
It wasn’t a rainbow, though the colors were sweeping quickly through the clouds and they carried the right colors. It wasn’t an aurora either; you can’t see those through a dense layer of rain clouds.
The pattern of prismatic colors felt naggingly familiar. I had seen something like this before, but I could not place where or when. This was definitely made by a Pony, human science could not hope to replicate this kind of thing.
And then it hit me. That pony cartoon had a cyan mare with a rainbow mane who had quite an egotistical streak. The patterns in the sky reminded me of her. “Right, her. Who else would it be. I should be glad that I’m not the only pony in this corner of the world, but she has no idea what she has done. The skies are a no-fly zone now. Thanks for that.”
It was a message. That ponies like me weren’t alone. It gave me a direction to go, and that direction was west. I needed to make preparations for a journey…
The problem is that this was less of a message and more of a bright signal flare. And since the military was now on alert, I’ll have to travel on hoof. The military was now watching the sky for anything anomalous. I literally have to stay under their radars…
