The show also said parent before that. Let’s not keep this discussion going. Because it could go on forever.
@Podo
Really doesn’t matter. The show says differently. They’re siblings.
@Background Pony #8DFC
I’m more inclined to go with what older material says than newer.
Background Pony #8DFC

Yeah, we had an episode that canonically settled all this already. The artist is right, they’re siblings
@Podo
I’m not ignoring it, I am just not playing the speculation game. If I were to speculate, I’d say their relationship for the vast majority of the series leans heavily on the sibling side, but that’s just an opinion, it’s not fact. And fact is that their relationship is not defined as anything other than Spike being Twilight’s friend and #1 assistant. I don’t think one episode alluding to a parental-like bond is definitive, so I choose not to comment on it.
@popmannn
So you’re ignoring the thing I keep mentioning about Father Knows Beast? Or did you just not watch that episode yet?
@Podo
I am not leaning on one side or the other of the Spike is child/brother debate, that is up for grabs. But permanent guardianship seems to be most likely from what is shown, and as far as interpersonal relationships between the two could go either way honestly.
Only thing we ever have been told is Spike is Twilight’s “friend and assistant”. Nothing more, nothing less. So as far as canon is concerned, that’s it. Everything else is speculation.
@popmannn
It is pretty much confirmed by canon that she raised him. Celestia only had him for a very short time, before giving him to Twilight, who then had him for the rest of his life. And repeatedly acts as a mother to him, and again it is outright referenced in Father Knows Beast that she was a parent to him. He was not adopted by Twilight’s parents, he was adopted by her.
@Podo
If we’re dipping into the comics then it needs to be pointed out that Celestia appears to be his legal guardian, and she just foists a lot of the responsibility of taking care of him on Twilight, who very much was a child. So, you know, kinda messed up. And a sibling being “raised” by another sibling as a legal guardian is something that does happen often. There is no confirmed, “Twilight adopted Spike”, and if Equestria’s child care laws are anything like ours, Spike would be a ward of the state, and Twilight would have permanent guardianship. Of course, none of of this is at all confirmed in any such way. Hence why my original statement is, “they aren’t anything as far as canon is concerned”.
@popmannn
Twilight isn’t just the one who takes watches him, she’s the one who RAISED him, she’s his mother. They even reference it in Father Knows Beast. There was an entire issue of the comics about it too. They are mother and child in every way other than directly calling each other that.
BTW, adoptive mother is still a mother. Blood is not a requirement
@Podo
As far as canon is concerned, they aren’t anything. At best I’d say Twilight is Spiles ward, cause she seems to be he legal guardian. Though the majority of the time they seem to be sibling coded, which would make Shining like Spike’s brother by the transitive property.
Funny. But they’re not brothers, they’re uncle and nephew
