I also wanted it to be as different from FiM as possible. In fact, I have been advocating since the announcement that we should consider them as different characters, give them separate tags and minimize any comparisons between generations. But sadly, Hasbro REALLY wants us to think they are the same characters, as it’s literally the only thing the marketing for g6 has done so far. No actual information about what g6 will be about, the setting or themes, only constant reaffirmations that the old characters are returning. And each member of the Mane 6 can only be herself if the other 5 exist. So, if they really want me to believe they are the same, then I’m forced to want all six of them.

They hinted they’ll supposedly appear later, but until they actually acknowledge their existence by name, instead of some vague reply on a instagram comment and a single line during the SDCC , it’s not worth trusting them. I mean, is it that hard to just say categorically “we will introduce Rarity and Applejack later”? And still, in a show that is only nine minutes per episode and that will release an episode every 2 weeks, how long will it take for “later” to arrive? Will this generation even survive for that long?

Honestly, Spike will most likely be present in this new generation, and I don’t know why people are doubting that. They have just announced g6, and Spike is very clearly not a top priority when it comes to marketing. Besides, I’m almost sure they don’t have that much material to work with yet,as they’ve have just been recycling those 3 same images by Nicholas Kole everywhere.
They hinted Rarity and AJ
But absolutely nothing for Spike(even then, him showing up later means he is just demoted to minor character or something. He’s screwed either way)
I think adding the two later is even more problematic. Wish they had just kept the original concept and just removed the 2 completely. I’m already dreading all the work that will need to be put into cleaning up all the damage they’ll cause with just 4, imagine having to that with 6.

Well, I trust Hasbro. Plus I don’t need G6 to be exactly like FiM, I’d rather it to be as different as possible.

The main characters shown are the same ones from gen 4 after a failing generation of trying to continue it. They are trying.
