@Juxtaponition In my opinion, while Project Horizons definitely veers into gratitous and excessive gore and grimdarkery for the authors self indulgent desire to be edgy, and its also nearly 3 times as long as the original, the plot is so much tighter and more focused than the original FOE. It’s really hard to recommend PH to anyone with all the rape and… other things… but its genuinely peak and way better than FOE, IMO.
@mollyBones Yeah, I guess I have seen “unnecessary/useless grimdark” as the most common bone to pick with that story. I’ve heard tell that some of the spin-offs did it even worse, by a significant margin. From what I , though, Steelhooves’ death was the only moment in the story that really got on my nerves like that.
I’d have to re-read or skim over those chapters to really the context and details, but “anticlimactic” and “plot-useless” definitely sound right for what I . Killing him “just for sads” felt cheap.
It was actually such an off story choice that when I was reading that entire aftermath chapter/scenes, I was fully expecting some sort of magical-ghoul-littlepip-trickery-whatever to happen and ressurect him. I got to the end of his funeral and went, “Wait what? That’s it?
@Juxtaponition Bruh thats like a good 60% of the story LOL. I thought it was a nice moment and he lowkey should have died in Canterlot bc that whole arc had zero stakes and his death after the fact was extremely anticlimactic and his loss wasn’t felt at all in the plot really
Yeah, I’ve avoided PH thus far for all the reasons you listed there. Have yet to completely write it off, though.
