Headcanon is that Princess Celestia has been playing a long game to find new Bearers for the Elements (if Sunset didn’t screw it up, it would have been her and not Twilight). This could imply that Celestia falls when NMM appears, and Twilight takes the mantle to banish her - Celestia, in her wound-addled state, sees a powerful alicorn banish NMM with the aid of the elements before she disappears, and knows that this alicorn must have been from the future, and thus her long game is to assure that alicorn with control of the Elements comes to light.
