I love shipping in general, Rarijack is a favorite, and I love it when the show teases us with that ship, but I still don’t get why so many people think this episode was shipping fuel. In many ways, it was the most anti-rarijack episode I can think of. Consider:
The theme was unambiguously about Rarity being jealous of Applejack for getting some guy’s attention, not the other way around.
Rarity was baffled when Trenderhoof was interested in Applejack, which suggests she hasn’t even considered that AJ might have romantic appeal.
When Rarity tried to mimic Applejack to get Trenderhoof’s attention, she CLEARLY failed to grasp what it was about Applejack that others would find attractive.
When Rarity confessed that she was surprised to finally see Applejack as beautiful, it was only because Applejack had momentarily given up her own persona and dressed up like Rarity’s own ideal of beauty, even using her own clothes.
Don’t get me wrong. Again, I love Rarijack, and can definitely see how Rarity might see Applejack’s true beauty if she could see past her own very limited standards, but this episode is definitely not the place to go if you wanna see that.
