Well quack medicines or patent medicines often had all sorts of drugs alongside alcohol. including heroin, morphine, cocaine, cannabis(many legitimate medicines also had this before it was made illegal), even Acetanilide which is very toxic but functioned similar to aspirin before that came along.

My first thought was booze cause thats what a lot of the old quack remedies were.
 
Though has anyone actually looked through some of those to make positively sure there did happen to actually be something to one of those old things?
