They seem like a race/species of ponies to me. The only major difference is size, and there’s no reason that a species can’t have wide differences there. (Not that real-world biology applies when sea ponies and crystal ponies exist.)
what I’m confused about here is the new race of ponies. surely you don’t mean, Breezies? ‘cause I’m sure they’re an entirely different species all together. :/

She was so meek that she let herself, an animal expert, get trampled by her ignorant friends.
She knew what needed to be done in the first place, but she let the others bully her into going along with their plan.

If that’s the case, then whose memory was it?
The fact that Twilight was viewing the events as an outside observer leads me to believe that the potion actually sent her consciousness into the past.
It’s debatable, but I think that it should be included.
Where was the Time-Travel in Season 4? Yes, we had that potion from the opener, but that wasn’t really time travel. She didn’t physically go there, it was all a memory. A flashback if you will.
Actually, it’s probably referring to the Breezies. Tiny as they are, they are equine.

“Species” and “race” are generally used interchangeably in fantasy.
