You misread me. I don’t expect them to stop printing Unicorn Twilight cards, just as I don’t expect them to stop printing other characters from the first three seasons. And while I’m a fan of Twilicorn, I do like the idea of her cards not being backwards compatible. There have been times this season when Twilight was closer to the other princesses than to the rest of the Mane 6. I just don’t want it to be the case for all the Twilicorn cards.
You’re implying they’re going to stop producing unicorn Twilight cards at some point. The fact that a mane, this far into the game’s production, with this much of a following is still a unicorn card of Twilight, to me, demonstrates that SOMEONE up there likes it that way. The fact that it’s a love-letter to those fans who like Unicorn Twilight more is just icing on the cake. Now, I think ‘Princess Twilight Sparkle’ is going to be counted as ‘Twilight Sparkle’ for the purposes of all card effects, whatever the card may be, but I also think that it’s damn funny that in its current state she can’t. I’m not one to hate on those who do like Alicorn Twilight, but I and no less than a hundred people I know do not. I find the balance struck in the card game to be an important one. At least, somewhere, in some aspect of the official things, Twilight Sparkle can still be a unicorn, for those of us who still prefer it that way. :)

The only weird thing is, by giving Alicorn Twilight her own character name (“Princess Twilight Sparkle”), cards such as Straighten Up & Fly Right or Team Effort that are designed around the Mane 6 won’t interact with her. Without rules text or errata to say that Princess Twilight Sparkle is also “Twilight Sparkle,” she’ll be separated mechanically from her friends. Not that that’s a bad thing, necessarily, but I would then hope they print at least one alicorn “Twilight Sparkle” so she can continue comboing with her Ponyville friends despite her wings and crown.
What I love most about the CCG is the fact that it caters to neither side of the Alicorn Twilight debate. It merely presents all things as they are and lets the players decide where they lie. the dichotomy created between these two cards is fabulous and I love every bit of it.
