Dude, he’s a blue-skinned environmentalist with the planet Earth as his Cutie Mark. It’s not hard to see why people would find they so similar. And, as I said, they might’ve intended to make it subtle, so as to avoid the same controversy regarding excessive references to other works found in the comics fanbase. But maybe that’s just me.
This event, this combining of powers, motivated one teenager to become a superhero. His quest was just about to begin. He would go on to bring pollution down to zero, but that is yet to come. For now, he is only Cadet Planet.
Is there a tag for distinguishing whether we mean Captain Planet the show its character or Captain Planet the background human some fans christened with that name?
Either it was intentional, or a happy coincidence. I’m not sure, myself, but I’m definitely exploiting the idea for my own amusement.

He doesn’t really look anything like Captain Planet at all though, nor any of the Planeteers.
Even if they were going to use his mark for the reference, they probably would’ve made it look a bit more similar to the Planeteer logo.
Maybe they didn’t want to make it so blatant?
If he was, he probably would’ve had a green mullet.
