@Proper Prose
Maybe he was out of town on a diplomatic assignment to Maretonia or Saddle Arabia or something, and mailed them an exotic wedding gift with his profuse apologies for not being able to make it?
@Dustcan
Given how Shining reacts to his presence, it might also imply that Cadance and Blueblood don’t interact very often. What Blueblood knows about her may be second hand knowledge.
Also to this day I cannot find a screencap of Blueblood at their wedding. Apparently practically all of Canterlot and Ponyville were invited, but can’t find him anywhere. Ouch.
Cadance: I just talked with Shining Armor, and he said you made some weird claims during your little diplomatic adventure. Like how he “fell in love with an orphan and ended up with a princess.” We’re going to have a conversation about your insensitivity about my life before meeting Celestia later, but right now I want to know what you’re talking about. While I don’t flaunt that sort of thing like you do, I was a princess about as long as I was an alicorn and I only first met him after becoming one.
Blueblood: You said you and Shining Armor had always been in love.
Cadance: Cousin, when I said that we had always loved each other, I did not mean before we had ever met!
I refuse to accept the GM Berrows book as canon, given how a pegasus could NOT perform magic as Cadance was described as doing and Trixie is suddenly evil again and teaming up with Gilda who would still be in Griffonstone anyways
But Shining apparently only met Cadence after she was both an alicorn and a princess. Two ways to make this work.
Blueblood doesn’t know when Shining met Cadence and is making assumptions. Or Blueblood doesn’t mean “Fell in love with an orphan who became a princess” but instead “Fell in love with the orphan princess.”
Hmm. The latter would make for a great idea in a fanfic on how he views Cadence…
This is the third time I’ve seen a reference to Cadance’s backstory (the other two were in Siege of the Crystal Empire and also in the pop-up “Castles of Equestria” book).
@Zharkaer
It has been marked as the story they’re going with concerning Cadance
Though, the way Blueblood says this implies Shining knew her before she was a princess, which we know not to be true. And somehow it feels a bit strange he would even know that about her.
She’s his cousin; I’m sure he’d know she was adopted. But yeah, it does break continuity by implying that.
…But that being said, the idea seems sweeter/more romantic that way (and maybe more cliched), even though it needs us to ignore the whole of Neigh Anything and slightly twist her backstory to fit it in. From what we know, it seems like Princess Celestia adopted her as her niece right after finding her, but it doesn’t say that outright. What if there was (veering off into alt continuity here, because like I said, Neigh Anything) a short while after Celestia brought her back before she adopted her, and colt!Shining and filly!Cadance met then? Someone write a fic.
…But I like to think the Cadance adoption happened when she was super young, so… Having a 5 year old (or even younger!) falling for a girl isn’t even remotely realistic.

Exhibitionist slut.
I just realized… Trixie was the Diamond Dog queen in IDW continuity, so Bluetrix shippers just gained some ammo.

SA: “What does that mean?”
BB: “Dat booty, man!”
SA: “… Yeeeeeeah, there is that.”
That almost looks like the Crystal Ponies are so bright they’re hurting Cadance’s eyes.
This works well for my “Cadance is an Anastasia expy” headcanon~
Heck, it’s even more fitting considering what specific villain song keeps getting associated with King Sombra
