Makes sense to me. These two (SA and BB) are going on an important diplomatic mission to discuss trade with the yaks and steer away from war and towards peace. SA and BB are the ones who will do the talking, meaning they need to get their safe, and in sound body and mind.
The ponies carrying BB are fulfilling a key role in the negotiations by ensuring BB’s joruney is a stress-free as possible. They won’t be regarded as heroes or anything, but they themselves will know they helped make the negotiations a sucsess.
EDIT: Also, I can only imagine the privalages that come from being a prince’s personal escort :P

Maybe Crystal Ponies are immune to the cold of the Frozen North as part of their racial magic. So this is just a pleasant walk for them.
