It’s as big or as small as it needs to be for a story, and will likely be different for the next story. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Given that it’s a not-densely-packed farming town with a railroad and probably has a population in the 5,000-6,000 range by the end of the cartoon, I’d say anywhere between 5 and 10 square miles (13-26 km²) would make sense, having lived most of my life in and around similar small towns.
If anyone sees this comment, would anyone be able to speculate on the approximate size of Ponyville in Square KM/MI? I don’t need an exact answer just a ballpark guess is all.
Mostly what I meant by “official map” was that DHX has a town layout that it uses internally– so that locations are consistent within episodes– but all you’d really need to make that opening shot (which is reproduced very nicely in the Art Of Equestria book, by the way) a practical map along the lines of Google Satellite View is to label the buildings. This map doesn’t do that either, but it’s clearly meant to evoke a specific kind of small town Americana postcard feel, so that’s not a dig or anything.

Well a plain birds eye view image without indications and detailed areas could hardly be called a map,its impractical unless you know the area in question extremely well. Cartography exist to give a sense of scale and direction to representations of an area. The image you gave doesn’t show the whole town in the same scale of distance like a top view would at least. You might be able to get a sense of the towns size or layout but you wouldn’t know where everything is in relationship to each other and it misses important features like the railroad.
A plain view of an area with no marking to show stuff is not a map,regardless of angle. You wouldn’t call the view you see looking down at a city from a high place a map would you? Point is there was no real official map of Ponyville,and we couldn’t discern one from plain show screenshots because their either missing things or have their object placements changed to fit the needs of the show for particular episodes. I doubt the writers will incorporate this map into the show.

That image is about as much as a map as a picture of Manhattan from the top of Empire State building is a map of Manhattan .
This one has a birds eye-view with some semblance of direction and districting,decent cartographical info(you know for a kids book) that will never be used because ponyville is a dynamic town,constantly changing as the show needs it to and as such it could never really have an official map regardless of source.
