In Equestria there would be a more efficient way to attach a horseshoe to your hooves. You can’t really sell many shoes if they are nailed to the owner and literally made of steel.
There’s nothing painful or injurious about getting horseshoes. Horse’s hooves are like fingernails, hard keratin without nerve endings except for the inner part (that doesn’t get nailed).
I suspect Night Light’s main worry is that Twilight, still being a young filly, would outgrow any horseshoes before she’s gotten his money’s worth out of them.

Nailing hooves is just like piercing ears - a stupid way of injuring part of your body to look cool. Ponies can use magic, but it isn’t as fancy.
Ugh. I still think ponies should have some means of footwear that doesn’t need to be nailed in. Though presenting horseshoes as analogous to pierced ears does make sense.
