And sometimes, when she’s being serious while it’s off, I also go ‘Oh, come on AJ, put that hat back on if you’re going to say stuff like that… I can’t take you seriously without the hat!’

That would actually be an excellent canon justification for the hat. Yeah, yeah, it belonged to her dad and all (even though she obviously owns several), but it’d be funny if she just didn’t like being seen as cute.
Took me a moment to realize why she’s so freaking adorable, on top of being ‘fit’: She’s not wearing her hat!
Of course she’s cute without her hat; That’s presumably why she wears it, she always looks adorable without it and is probably not taken seriously.
