Apparently it’s supposed to be Stygian’s great great grandkid or something. He wanted to erase all knowledge of the pony of shadows/stygian to make sure he never came back.
Given how the pony of shadows was one of the most forgettable villains the show has, and how Stygian in the show’s backstory (And comic backstory) doesn’t really lend itself to him having a kid OR being feared about his return (Given that its more that he was being possessed by some shadow thing and the whole event was implied to have happened almost out of the blue and been wrapped up incredibly quickly without a whole lot of time for anyone else to know), this comic plot REALLY did not fit well or age well.

Shadow Lock turned out to be a descendant of Stygian’s family line. He was trying to erase all historical mention of the Pony of Shadows because he was afraid that he might end up becoming it if anyone ever uncovered its existence.

The best part about the ‘real life’ Church of Satan is that they don’t even believe in Satan. They just use him as a symbol to represent self-worship, which is what they actually teach.
At least that’s what they say. I’m pretty sure they use him as a symbol specifically to troll other religions.

Thinking it’ll be just like the Issue 4 climax; the others trapped and cheering on twilight’s greatness with her godmoding with a heroic second wind due to “friendship” to save the day.

Another possibility is this: just how many times have Twilight and the gang saved the day by looking something up in a book? Nightmare Moon, the Alicorn Amulet, the Mirror Pool, the cloud walking spell the list goes on. Taking away their source of knowledge puts them at a disadvantage not just against major villains, but also everyday problems.
Cuts both ways though; the villain would lose the ability to look up stuff himself, such as knowing about things like the elements of harmony or other macguffins, so a villain would be harming themselves almost as much wiping out books just to get rid of knowledge.
I would think that the villain would have to have explicit weaknesses they were trying to wipe out rather than just blank check removing the ability to research.

Yes. It tied in with the season‘s theme of family and legacy, and teased the villain.
