Considering that there are plenty of dangerous sentient creatures in Equestria willing to hurt you, claiming to be poisonous is probably a common strategy when a pony encounters a potentially hostile creature. I like to imagine that every fifth pony Tirek encounter during his magic-stealing rampage claimed to be poisonous.
Also who’s that new pony? Another OC? Is she even part of the cult? She doesn’t wear one of those fashionable cloaks.
The cheerful pastel colors and brightly colored cutie marks are aposematism.
Maybe they’re super-fancy hock protectors, or at least that’s the main function, and we’re seeing the nifty outer covering. Being horses, it’d make sense.
