Honestly it would’ve been weird for anypony in this episode to just outright say ‘they’re dead’.  
If they are, then it’s already a known fact to the apple siblings, so why bring it up?  
“Yeah I’d enjoy telling more stories about them, SINCE THEY’RE DEAD,” would be awkward at best.

then why don’t they just say it? Disney had no problem talking about dead “people” hell in the lion king we saw mufasa’s body and in THBOND we saw frollo kill Quasimodo’s mother so why not show grave stone(s)?
Different standards and those movies were PG anyway.
 
Um, no, both movies are G, because Disney was just more immune to PG ratings back then than it is now.
