Weird, Literally 2 hours ago, my dad showed me a youtube compilation of toy adds from the 60’s. The pie face was one of the more cringe worthy adds. My dad use own a pie face, minus the pony theme of course.
I recall seeing the original version of Pie Face.
It was released in 1968. That version came with a tray in the hand to place the foam sponge, which would come in handy so the sponge doesn’t fall off.
I feel it is typical they chose Spike to get pie to the face.

It’s funny to see merch’ related to the slapstick nature of the show. Before G4/FiM, MLP wasn’t really known for “humor,” or slapstick.
(Even though the G1 1980s cartoon had some ironically.)
