Well, it was only Rainbow Dash who saved Twilight from turned into one of the Storm King’s statues. And Derpy, who was seen running past Twilight who was in front of her during the beginning of the Storm King’s reign of Equestria. And Derpy didn’t see the last orb that Tempest hurl.
I think Rainbow dash and Derpy want to save Twilight, when Derpy reach to twilight at the same time Rainbow reach her as well because Rainbow dash is fast she get away with turning into stone but Derpy couldn’t make it.

I’m guessing that their take on Derpy’s appearance in “Twilight’s Kingdom” is that she just saw a huge group (swarm? flock?) of pegasi and decided to in for the heck of it.
That actually didn’t happen Derpy just so happened to be running in the direction of Twilight and RD saved Twilight Derpy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think Rainbow Dash used Derpy as a “human” shield for Twilight.
I thought that the first time I watched, but the second time made me wonder if they both weren’t trying to protect Twilight. Muffins might be the second best Pegasus, just extremely clumsy? a brony might clear this up for good.
