If you look closely the twistaff is not being used as a fandom reference, but as a fadom reference… This doesn’t invalidate your point, I just want to bring attention to the typo. But yeah kinda hard to call Derpy or Twican refs to the fandom when they are part of the show first.

She’s not a pop culture reference, no; however, the ”…hungry.” “Hungry?” “Hippos?” exchange definitely is, and I’d argue that Rarity saying “I can’t even.” counts even if it’s not referring to one specific show/movie/whatever.
