Yes, the knot is a newer thing. To be honest I didn’t know about that either. I thought that was a regional thing, because often there are slight differences depending on the area, but apparently I was wrong. I think it’s kind of like with the flowers in Hawai’i. In the end, it’s just a matter of own preference, I guess. In the area were I live, it’s done with the color of the apron. The only thing I , though, is that a black apron means the wearer is a widow. But I think it’s just a matter of preference as well.
But to sum it up:
Front right side (“heart” side) - married
Front left side - not married
Back middle - widow
Front middle - virgin, I think

Yes, the differing authenticity of the dirndls is deliberate. Twilight is supposed to represent that she did the research, while Shy simply dons a sexier, commercialized design.
The only thing I was initially lost with was the position of the apron knot. During research I found some that were tied to the left and others to the right, but it was only later, when I was nearly done with the pic, that I was informed through someone who actually knows a little about the dress that the position of the knot was supposed to indicate marital statuses (there is also a version tied to the back that is supposed to indicate that the wearer is a widow), but they were also unsure which side is which. At least I know now.

Well yeah, but it still needs a bit of foam to look good. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but you really need strength and a steady hand. Most waitresses use something to carry them.
Twilight’s dress is much closer to an actual Dirndl. Fluttershy’s looks like something Viennese would wear. Ech.
Also, Twilight is apparently married.

The less beer that’s contained in each stein makes carrying them easier!
It’s not that hard. You can carry 6 glasses in each hand. Not spilling it however, is another story.
