That lecture that he gave at MIT? He was already in his 70s then; his mind had been attacking its own thought processes for a very long time.
By the time he became “Internet Famous” there probably wasn’t much anyone could have done to effectively help him. You’ve gotta , therapy and anti-psychotic medication can only help those who are willing and actively want help, and at that point Gene was already so far gone that the thought of seeking help was insulting to him. In his mind, he didn’t need help, everyone else did because they were ignorant idiots too stupid to understand his genius.
It’s sad what happened to Gene Ray and it’s certainly reprehensible how people egged on his psychosis, but it’s done and in the past. He’s dead. I mostly look at it as an example of what not to do in the future; how throwing a mentally unstable person in the spotlight can be very damaging to them, be that light cast in earnest or in mockery.

Gene Ray was very disturbed and preached a scientific concept so out-there that he was pretty much guaranteed to be mocked. He gave lectures and hosted his own websites, though they were mainly only frequented by people who wanted to make fun of him (something he couldn’t always tell they were doing).
Ray ended up getting one follower, an Australian guy named Richard Janczarski, who was a very lonely young man and mentally ill himself. The two had a falling out when Ray became paranoid that Janczarski was somehow turning against him and his theories, and after becoming increasingly upset over his idol shunning him Janczarski eventually jumped in front of a moving train.
Ray eventually died of natural causes (the guy was already very old), only really known for being a huge punch-line to both the scientific community and the internet. The story’s one huge depressing mess and a great example of how people egging on an insane man can end very badly even when violence is never entered into the equation.
