If you don’t count in toylines, then it’s worse, because G2 never had a show, making it only 3 gens so far. What is sometimes incorrectly considered a “G2 show” is actually the second G1 show with a separate continuity.
The spirit of the ponies shall never be extinguished. The show and the fandom will survive well into the future and beyond. When we explore strange new worlds, we still have that spirit. And I think it’s possible that Zefram Cochrane is a brony himself. Who knew.

Though I think a better approach might be to assume an average generational span based on there being 4 generations since 1984 (counting the movies/TV series, not the toy lines). This yields 35 years for 4 generations, so actually less than 10 years on average per generation. Yields 8.75 years/generation.
10/8.75 = 1.143, so multiply the generation numbers given by 1.143 to get the generation number based on averaging the 4 currently existing gens.
IIRC, it was still officially part of Gen 1. Maybe it could be considered a “Gen 1.5”, but it wasn’t part of Gen 2.
So it’s a different show, with a different continuity, but you consider it the same Gen?
