Reiwa. It’s the new era name in Japan that will come into effect when the new emperor ascends to the throne next month. The current emperor is abdicating (a pretty unusual move) due to stated reasons of age and declining health.

Maybe not since Kokaku, but some 40 or so Emperors through Japanese history have abdicated. It’s more unusual that it was to a son, and not some more indirect successor. But that’s about it.
Well, I mean unusual in the sense that this isn’t the usual way a Japanese emperor leaves the throne for his successor. I am well aware of the fact that there has been abdications in Japanese imperial history before, but generally-speaking the expectation is that, once a Japanese emperor is on the throne, he is on there till he dies. Abdication is not the way most Japanese emperors hand the throne to their successors.
Well, unless the next one goes full Meiji: business as usual. The Emperor is a symbolic position again, just sort of exists as a cultural thing for Japan and doesn’t have a whole lot of political power in Japan. It’s a constitutional restriction I think. It was part of their surrender after the War.

Akihito officially abdicates in a month. They’ve really planned the process out. They just announced the name of the next emperor’s era today.

Abdication is not the way most Japanese emperors hand the throne to their successors.
Well, unless the next one goes full Meiji: business as usual. That’s the sort of thing you can really only decide in retrospect.
