yeah I mean she only tried to drain magic, form a villain clique and try to take over the world, obviously rehab will set her straight because I mean hey she was offered redemption a bunch of times and threw that shit away, how about one more shot?
…mate, there’s only so many chances you can give on redemption before you just give up

I don’t think the argument of Tartarus being so unsafe holds much water when it was Discord who broke them out. He’s pretty much a demigod.
Only Tirek and Cozy was depowered. Chrysalis was brought down to her “normal” state which is still highly dangerous.
Being locked up has not stopped Tirek. He’s escaped once and managed to manipulate from his cell the other. They would literally need something to stop Chrysalis and Tirek from doing magic at all, and need some sort of guard that isn’t easy to manipulate for Cozy. All with the knowledge that they’ve escaped before and they were lucky it was just Discord who broke them out.
Starlight was a different case - her punishment was reformation. She had to do what Twilight ordered her to do, and live with her guilt. As we see in season 6, Starlight was essentially punishing herself. Stygian lived a 1000 years in limbo for his punishment (and he was punished essentially for being possessed).

I know not everypony sees it that way, but to me, there is a difference between what happens in battle and what happens when you’ve already won. These three were already depowered. They weren’t a threat anymore. Locking them up would’ve been fine. This… just seems needlessly cruel. With a creature like Discord, he’s too powerful to do anything else. And he can break free anyway. These three? They’re functionally dead.
Do note that I am not saying there should be no punishment. Hay, Starlight Glimmer got off way too easy and the show went out of its way to whitewash Stygian.

They nearly destroyed their kingdom, nearly killed everyone they cared about, and caused the citizens to turn on each other. I’m sorry but punishing people who did that would be satisfying as hell.
I mean, hell, the Mane Six were happy after stoning Discord, seeing Chrysalis flung to who knows where, Sombra blown up, and Tirek drained. Does that make them bad?

The stone or execute those 3 because Celestia and Luna said there’s no punishment that is worthy of what you 3 have done and with that face they make they are ready to wipe them off from Equestria.

As far as I’m concerned, the punishment could be a loving but disciplined prison sentence rather than turning her to stone.
