You seem to be forgetting that in order to use magic consciously, one needs a horn. Cadence didn’t need a horn. I’m not defending Twilicorn, I’m rationalizing Cadence’s success based on her achievement, seeing as she effectively shit all over conventional wisdom and managed to overpower somebody using a powerful amplifying artifact in a non-agressive manner. We’re not commenting on it being a marketing ploy, that’s all on you. What I’m saying is that Cadence has proven herself to be Alicorn material because she had both power and an understanding of it that goes beyond ‘point at target and fire’.

Without unicorn magic. You’re forgetting that love is a form of magic. A really fucking powerful form of magic, and one that isn’t exclusive to any one race.
Are we to believe that not only do Cadence and Twilight have a better understanding of love and friendship, respectively, than any other pony in a country literally founded on the magic of love and friendship, but that this comprehension is so much better that it warrants giving them political power and ascension to godhood‽
Even if Twilight is some kind of crazy friendship savant, and is better at friendship (something she’s very new at) than thousands of ponies who have had more friends for longer, whoop-de-fucking-do. That doesn’t qualify her for political office.
Twilight Sparkle is the absolute last pony you’d want in the government. And don’t give me that “Games Ponies Play” deep-breaths horseshit, because GPP was a minor hiccup compared to the problems that come with a title that carries actual responsibilities like, say, PRINCESS. Being neurotic and panicky is part of Twilight’s character, part of her personality. It doesn’t go away just because she does some fucking breathing exercises.
Making Cadence and Twilight alicorns is obviously a marketing ploy done to drum up toy sales, and the creative staff was left with the task of somehow stitching them onto/into the carefully balanced world that Faust created.
I don’t blame the creative staff; they can only polish a turd so much, and a shiny turd is still a turd. Granted, “Magical Mystery Cure” was poorly written and full of plotholes even before the Twilicorn shit, but that’s a different conversation. But this is just what happens when marketing and selling toys takes precedence over good storytelling and maintaining a balanced, cohesive, and consistent world.
Faust wasn’t the goddess that some people seem to think she was, and that people accuse me of thinking she was. She had her fair share of dumb ideas, and Hasbro rightly talked her down from them. But now Hasbro has no one to talk the down from their stupid ideas, and as a result we see shit like Derpygate, alicorn Cadence, the Crystal Empire, Twilicorn, and Equestria Girls.
There is a tiny silver lining in Equestria Girls (and its possible TV show), though. Perhaps it means that the characters have resonated with people enough that they will live beyond Friendship Is Magic, achieving a kind of cartoon immortality. And maybe, years down the road, the show will get rebooted, and we’ll get to see Equestria the way it should’ve been, the not the way Hasbro’s charts and focus groups think will make the most money.
