All sides have mixed pony races. Especially Shu, who had the largest amount of non-Han Chinese such as the Nanman people at their allegiance. I’d imagine griffons and buffaloes are in the mix too.
But the three kingdoms are distinguished by their respective majority pony races in each of them.
Zhuge Liang, though he served Shu, would likely be a unicorn. Not to mention that he was from Shandong, which was a Wei territory during the Three Kingdoms period, and the home region of many Chinese scholars including Confucius and Xu Fu.
The reason why I imagined Wu as Earth, was because the ruling family of Wu was so much like the Apple Family. It is also in Southern China, with their rich agricultural lands.

I’ll give you Cao Cao as a Unicorn, but I’d argue that his forces would also be a mix of all three since he was famous for accepting just about anyone into his army, even former enemies. Maybe several leading generals would be Unicorns, and others Earth and Pegasus ponies. For example, Xiahou Yuan could be a Unicorn in order to fire bows, while Xiahou Dun could be an Earth pony since he was known to be a ferocious fighter.

Really? I would’ve argued Earth Pony myself, what with being able to claw his way up to Prime Minister despite not having particularly impressive lineage like Liu Bei or being lucky enough to come after an impressive predecessor like Sun Quan.
