Yeah, that’s the one. Funny thing is, they had a home menu wallpaper of it available on 3DS back when it’s Eshop was still open. (As well as Sega’s other systems.)

SG-1000, it was a Coleco clone. At the time SEGA was American, while they did have a manufacturing plant in Japan.
Also look up the Othello & Dina2 .

Wasn’t GameGear kinda a portable Master System?
I think Sega actually had a TV system before Master System, but I can’t what it was called, and it never made it to America. I think it was older than the Famicom even.

Sega Ltd Japan kept making GameGear units far after it ceased making Master System units, thus the later GameGear handhelds were well optimized & were more capable than the last Master System unit they made, despite them having the same basic chipset & internal design.
Further more, the Master System is basically a ColecoVision2, its more obvious when you see the Japan cartridge shape its basically a Coleco cartridge.The SMS has no protection, theres a third party device that lets you legitimately play Coleco cartridges on it. So yes you can play DonkeyKong on the Sega Master System.
Sega asked Coleco if it needed permission on legal papers to keep doing what they were doing, the Coleco side basically said, it doesnt seem necessary if we are leaving the business.

Sonic 1 might be an exception, as it’s Game Gear version was actually easier then the Master System. Especially, considering Level 2 of the Jungle Zone couldn’t scroll downward (if you tried to backtrack you’d die as a result) unlike the GG version for some reason. Which is odd, considering every other vertical level doesn’t have that problem.
@requiem-dirge
It didn’t die off, it just got transferred over to SEGA’s Game Gear system.

That was actually part of the problem with the Game Gear (along with its ridiculous battery consumption and the horrible contrast on that screen). So much of what was on the GG was Master System ports and, while they were certainly more colorful due to the system’s improved palette, most of the games were VASTLY inferior to their Master System version.

While this wasn’t AS big an issue in North America since no one gave half a crap about the Master System here, but in Europe, well, people loved the system, and let’s be honest, the ports suffered from horrible screen crunch. Especially Sonic 2.

apparently, and this is according to the people who were trying to emulate the xbox, x86 is a whole nother beast compared to what others did.

once emulation of x86 can happen and be reliable, than all bets are off if x86 is going to stick around or not, anything legacy could be emulated and anything not legacy… well you have to use it.

at least with the way that emulating x86 was explained to me, it probably isnt going to be happening on an x86 chip. that said, there is a good chance that they figure out how to get the games to boot and run off current chips like they did with halo, LONG before emulation is possible.

also, just a side note, at least the way quantum computers is explained to me, they aren’t better than what we currently have for most tasks, they just REALLY excel in some tasks, suck as cryptography. im not sure how true that is, but its the info im running off of.
@alidan
x86 will never die, for obvious reasons.

literally the only reason x86 goes away is if cell phone parts that are NOT x86 replace them OR if the physical limits stops the development of all u’s…which would mean all conventional competing chips (whether they be in phones or consoles or anything performance based) would ultimately also be replaced by say quantum computing or some radically new computing paradigm ((not sure if I got the words right)).

oh and the original xbox ISN’T emulatable almost solely for the reason that people aren’t interested in putting the effort forward. It’s pretty much the opposite of the PS2:
xbox is a pc basically and frequently had its exclusives ported to pc (or at least on other consoles); ps2 is fucking complicated arch but it’s got so many exclusives (or at least not ported to pc) and so much nostalgia attached to it, that it’s worth all the effort that’s been put into it.

also, fyi, halo runs natively on PC and was a great port for the time.
x86 is x86… if anything we will find a way to execute the code on the pc like they did with halo for xbox, but likely not emulateable till after x86 is dead for a number of reasons.

Only real way for that to happen is for there to be a way to get around the specific hardware calls that console games make… And I imagine such being easier on AMD cards than nVidia. As to the death of x86, I wonder how long it’ll take to get there… x86 has been around for a while.
@alidan
See, I don’t get why people replaced their systems instead of sending them off to get repaired. I kept my same Core 360 until the sexier redesigned S came out and I gave that old warhorse to my brother. Everything breaks eventually, as my old TurboDuo will attest to, so here’s hoping we find something soon.
As for emulating the PS4 and Xbone, it’ll likely be a long time, yes, but consider how long it took for good PS2 emulation, or good Cube emulation. Hell, for a while it was thought that the Saturn was impossible to emulate, but someone sat there and cracked the code with SSF. Given how popular these two systems are proving to be, I think we have a better chance than we did with the old Xbox…

the saturn was a nightmare to emulate because it used 2 processors, and honestly, ps2 didn’t take long to be emulateable, it was within the 7X more powerful timeframe, and because the wii used a more powerful gamecube processor, it was emulateable at 1080p within the console cycle.

Part of why so many people view the older generations more fondly. So many genres have been pretty much defined, and even the greats like Nintendo seem to be having difficulty making something that truly pushes their tent-pole genres forward. I think it’s going to be a long damned time before we see another Super Mario 64.
As for the Master System, well, it was victim to not only Nintendo’s abuse of monopoly powers (which would also claim the TurboGrafx in the US), but also to the incompetence of Sega in Japan and Tonka in the US. System never really had a chance.

well, you have bayonetta 2 for spectacle fighters,
you also have mario galaxy for 3d platformers,

there are problably some others in there…

also older consoles are seen more fondly because they dont break for no reason in the same console cycle…

i had 8 360s
2 ps3’s
2 wiis
my ds top screen broke through normal use.
my original ps2 broke because of lazer i think, possibly some other reason as i could have fixed a laser
my original xbox came with a faulty ethernet port

yea… the wondrous modern age…

at least you can emulate ps2 games now, and are honestly shockingly close to ps3 emulation.

because of the ps4 and one using x86, there is a chance we will never see emulation of them, as x86 is fucking hard to emulate.

sadly, consoles are more often than not defined by their failings. worst part is, once the genre has a genre defining game… its pretty damn hard to make a new genre defining game.
@alidan
this. this is what should define consoles.
Deletion reason: No reason given
@alidan

ok…you got me there …

the games was pretty limited compered to
the nes but still it had games
@odiz
lets specify this, the nes had games that defined genres, are seen as classics today, and are still enjoyed and played…

the master system… it has some games that people know today, but not much people would go out of their way for, at least not state side.

even when you move to the next gen, it had some games, but snes is the one that has all the classics from the era on it.

sure, you can point to specifics like phantasy star or sonic, hell even mortal combat, but the sheer volume on the snes with no equal is something to be noted.

“Pony archaeologists believe the name derives from it being considered too much of a privilege for slaves and other human undesirables.”

… That sums up any archaeologist that ends up off-target. When it comes to something that was the commonest in one place, to someone else with so little knowledge of the subject later on they may think we literally had Flying Saucers made out of Pizza in the sky abducting humans or something. (You know, the “Pizza Pie in the Sky” saying? This sounds like something a little kid would think up.)
i had the MS version of sonic on my wii but it wasn’t very good so i replaced it with super mario 64
