There was so much story potential there that if they had explored it they could have made Magical Mystery Cure…you know…not suck.
Celestia has a plan to facilitate Twilight’s ascention to demi-goddesshood! What is her plan? What does she hope to accomplish by doing so? Is there an imminent threat? Does she just have a deep personal attachment to her student? Is Celestia even thinking clearly? Is there danger involved in allowing Twilight to become a princess as Luna seems to think? Can Luna be won over, or is another royal schism possible?

Couldn’t of said it better myself. IDW Luna is awesome and unique. Her flaws are apparent and her attitude is out of date, just what you’d expect given Luna’s backstory. Luna’s interaction with Scootaloo WAS nice, but for the most part its fallen into a corporate controlled rut.
Take show Luna’s seeeeemless transition from Crystal Empire to Twilight’s Kingdom.
Luna: “I do not approve of your plan for Twilight and the ascension book, dear sister.”
Hasbro: “Well we can’t have that!”
(skip ahead to Twilight’s Kingdom without any character changes)
Luna: “I have 100% approval of giving Princess Twilight all the encouragement in world.”
Luna was given almost zero characterization in S4 and most of S3.

The best thing about that version of Luna is that she is a unique character. No other character in universe is going to get the Frau Blucher effect whenever she stomps her foot. She is awkward but in a way that makes sense for someone who is quite literally living out of her time. CAPS LOCK Luna stands out in the cast. As she was in the show afterward, she may as well have just been Cadance.

What? Woona, Gamer Luna, the Dream Walker…they all suck ass. Cook’s Luna, which is inspired by the “Luna Eclipsed” Luna, is the only one with any personality.
