to be fair the comic that tmnt started as was known for being rather dark. hell the very first story emphasized that they existed to kill the shredder so family dynamic was pretty damn shaky.
 
personally i am preferring the tmnt 2012 series thus far. it has a combination of events that make more sense. splinter being yoshi, but instead of it being a work around for someone dying we have it that his wife is dead, and his becoming a mutant become something symbolic. he was given new life and a new family.
