Tribal allegiance, places of birth, and paternal decent were extremely important things back in the day. Being able to know who one’s great-grandfather is is also important for genologies and to keep cousins from screwing each other. That’s just a universal thing, whether one’s a Irish cattle rancher or a Bedouin nomad.

On the other hand, traditional Spanish names include two surnames, and often include the names of saints and famous relatives in them. A good long name is a symbol of pride. Okay, can someone please explain to me what is the POINT of having such long names? Nobody could possibly them, writing them down is a chore, keeping track of them in offices and such is a pain, and even if it was about making sure that nobody’s name ever repeats, you can easily avoid this problem with just 3 names (and the middle one isn’t usually used anyway).
So what the fuck? What country would have EVER considered this a good idea? What leader would be mentally challenged enough to allow this?
