@Dizzy Pen: I was thinking that myself. But the whole “most dark mages come from Plegia” thing is only true in FE13. But then there’s the fact that Miriel, Cordelia, and Libra, are clearly not Plegians, despite having access to the Dark Mage class.
Don’t know how the explanation would work for Fates, since that has a different situation regarding their Dark Mages.

My plot-related explanation is that since almost (if not all) Dark Mages come from Plegia, and since Plegia is in a desertic landscape, they designed them to look a little bit like a mixture of Arabic and Egyptian.

Still kinda confused as to why the art director decided to go with this look for the female Dark Mage instead of something more along the lines of thesethreegirls. Granted, I could possibly see where the art director was going. Seeing as some practitioners of fell arts are depicted with similar appearances in fiction. But to make it the default look for just about every Dark Mage in the game? Eh…

Played straight with Tharja: She wears one of the skimpiest outfits, yet has one of the best defenses (at least Nowi has the excuse of being a dragongirl/Manakete, and Olivia is an instance of skimpy = poor defense)
You could also say that she was too sexy for Smash, so she turned down the offer to appear in the game. That’s the joke.
