Pinkie and Rainbow are basically just more straight modernizations of Surprise and Firefly.

so basically I don’t think this was built from Twilight at all, this is a different strain - plus the dating of this is BEFORE the Twilight Twinkle rig which is Aug 2009, this is from June 2009.
All the characters are built from the ???? character rig (which we also have, I found that in one of the Apple Bloom alternate clothes .fla files) but this one isn’t at all, it’s more like one of the stationary side shots except this one actually has a few frames of animation.

this is slightly separate though as in this rig of dash isn’t actually a character model rig, it literally only contains the run animation, no head movement or any placeholders at all; it’s a separate being (which makes it all the more strange that it was briefly used in Dragonshy).

As I’ve said, Twilight’s assets were built first, and this one was built off of that, and roughly used in an old runcycle sent to the licensor for approval.
Twilight’s full rig wouldn’t be sent to the licensor, as they were pretty much made unusable before being sent, as why the lipsync of all the rotation angles in this are just fucked up. The full rig was made and animated way before any of the other mane six or background characters, so it’d be easier to make other characters with the same base.

Yes but we dont have that animation :) this is the first one weve seen unless twilights is hidden anywhere in the assets. This is from back when Twilight was a different shade of purple and had a differdnt cutie mark, and was called Twilight Twinkle.
Well more like Lauren wanted her to BE Firefly, but legal stuff.
Anyway as the other guy said, Twilight is based on Lauren’s mother, but here’s some more tidbits! Fluttershy is based on herself and Rarity is the character she’s most proud of, finding the source on these two tidbits again might be damn well impossible since it was on a livestream in early 2015 but I it and the threads discussing it on /mlp/.
I’m going to take a guess and say that RD was the first to be animated because of the wings, they might have wanted to test how well they could do them.
