I’mma say that the Apple, Star and Wing are for Earth pony, Unicorn and Pegasus. The symbols in the middle are more relevant to the pony’s personality traits.
The shield: stands for defense or helping those who need help aka helping others gain cutie marks or reaffirming their talents (like Trouble Shoes and now DT)
The colors: Their primary mane colors. Basically they’re friends for life with their destinies “ed at the hip”, pun intended.

The size bothered me too…… but maybe that extra space is there for a reason…..
I also think the marks look a little small on their flanks.
The shield represents the crusader’s oath.
The images within the shields represents their individual talents.
The only problem I had with them is the size. They look rather small.
