I’m probably reading too much into this scene, but I think it’s pretty brilliant. To be able to tell not just Dash’s story, but also Lightning Dust’s, and Derpy’s. And Spitfire! How did Spitfire become captain despite never being the best flyer? She must’ve did something amazing to get everyone’s respect.
@PonyPon
This is what a lot of people don’t seem to consider. Granted it would have helped if they had made all the others taller to better drive home the point they didn’t actually know her for very long as a foal in the more advanced circuit.
I still have trouble believing that all of these ponies here are in the same age range…
I always thought of Spitfire, Soarin’ and Fleetfoot being at least a few years older than, say, Rainbow Dash and Lightning Dust!
@Beau Skunky
Aye, though looking at it now, the only friend she has is the good Doctor, with whom she is on hugging with. Not saying much in that aspect, mind you.
@Beau Skunky
A blue-whale of a catch is “catching the impossible”, which is that the Derpiest, clutziest pone got one of the best possible “close friends”, being Dr Hooves himself. There are many jokes of the Doc with Rose, though he seems to have an adorable connection with Derpy being the only one we’ve seen him share affection with and vice versa.
So it is a “can’t have close friends of the opposite sex, without romantic feelings” Bl

But yeah, I’m sure I’m reading too much into it.
They seem to use her as an occasional sight-gag too. Some cases like the pizza gag, they didn’t even bother to hide her.
Her appearances are mostly a where’s Waldo gag as a fan favorited character.

That does make the context of the image make more sense
Rainbow at least is deliberately displaced in age group due to talent.
She’s a junior in a senior class.

Fans used to commonly make her friends with Carrot Top. (AKA Golden Harvest.) Though, they never interacted in the show.
Yeah, a friend who is also a colt.
… come to think of it, we haven’t seen her actively be friends with any mares so…
You also said Colt-friend. Bl
Edited
I said close friend.
In a way you did
You automatically assumed they where a couple, just because they are close.
I didn’t say that.

What do you mean by that?
I think that may have some connection with her ability to destroy town hall on accident.
Maybe she’s freakishly strong
Maybe she shouldn’t have stoked up her ego to the point she was endangering other ponies…
